A minilift, or lateral cheek lift, is appropriate for early facial aging. This procedure improves the jaw line and addresses early jowl formation. Suture techniques are used to tighten not only the skin of the cheeks and jaw line but the deeper tissues that envelop the facial muscles. There is no chin incision and no contouring of the neck in a minilift, and the resulting scar goes around the ear but doesn’t extend as far down along the posterior hairline as in a traditional facelift.
An Ultralift focuses exclusively on the neck and jaw line. It is ideally suited for a patient who wishes contour improvements in these areas and has excess fat in the neck causing a blunted neck-chin angle but does not have significant amounts of excess neck skin. This technique uses a small incision under the chin to introduce fluid into the neck followed by externally applied, high intensity ultrasound energy, which breaks up the fat and generates heat which helps the neck skin contract to the new contours. The excess fluid and fat are then suctioned out, the neck muscles are tightened and then the incision is closed. No skin is removed. An elastic support is worn for 1 week and then worn to sleep only, for 2 more weeks.
