Profound RF

Profound RF is a multi-bipolar, long-pulse, radio-frequency, micro-needling device that has the unique capability of measuring skin impedance between needle pairs and adjusting the current instantaneously, to deliver the exact amount of energy selected to produce a safe treatment that reliably smooths and tightens skin. So, what’s the big deal? For starters, it is the first FDA approved device that may be promoted for elastin production. In fact, it has been shown through biopsy studies to increase the amount of elastin in the skin three to five times (300% to 500% more) when compared to the baseline amount of elastin. This is an important advance in skin rejuvenation since elastin production naturally stops for most individuals by age 30. Therefore, over time we have less and less elastin and our skin becomes more lined, wrinkled and saggy. Elastin is the spring in our skin. It accounts for our skins’ snappiness.  Profound RF can be used anywhere there is skin except the eyelids, and it stimulates elastin production enabling the skin to appear and behave more youthfully. Profound RF will improve texture, though not as effectively as CO2 laser (which can only be used safely on the face), but it will tighten sagging skin in the lower face, jowls and neck and make skin more snappy. Profound RF is approved for use regardless of skin color and is an effective non-surgical treatment for skin of the décolleté, lower abdomen, “banana roll” where the leg meets the buttocks and the area above the knees which commonly sags with aging. It will also complements CoolSculpting body contouring results by tightening the loose skin that results from fat reduction. Also, Profound RF has an FDA indication for the treatment of cellulite.

Profound RF is currently offered as a single treatment, though for those who have had it done more than 2 years ago, a second treatment is sometimes recommended. Particularly if you had a good response with your initial treatment. The procedure is safely performed using local anesthesia and oral Xanax to make you more relaxed during treatment. Most procedures can be completed in about 1-2 hours. Post-operative care will include a light layer of Aquaphor ointment for 2-3 days. Some bruising and swelling should be expected though it should not last more than 1-2 weeks. There is no disruption of the normal skin barrier, therefore no oozing or peeling is expected. Also, there is minimal risk of skin pigment changes such as redness, or long-term hypo- or hyper-pigmentation. Typically, results gradually reveal themselves over a period of 3-12 months after treatment. For most patients, the improvements are expected to last for several years, though individual results may vary. Though elastin production is stimulated and the absolute number of elastin molecules increase by 300% to 500% compared to baseline in every patient, clinical outcomes can vary with about 80% of patients treated getting meaningful skin tightening while about 20% of those treated get subtle improvement or in rare cases, no visible improvement when compared to their pre-treatment photographs. This is the drawback of any non-ablative, non-surgical/non-excisional, technology for skin tightening. The final results depend upon the patients biological response to the energy delivered and as is well known, not everyone responds equally to any aesthetic treatment.
