Addressing GLP-1–Associated Hair Thinning and “Ozempic Face”
The rise of GLP-1 receptor agonists—such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound)—has reshaped how millions of people manage weight and blood sugar. These medications have offered transformative benefits for metabolic health and weight loss. Yet, as their use expands, so does awareness of aesthetic side effects that can accompany rapid weight reduction. Two of the most frequently reported are hair thinning and facial fat loss, sometimes called “Ozempic face.”
While these changes can feel discouraging, the good news is that safe, effective treatments exist. Let’s explore what’s happening—and how evidence-based therapies like Red Light Therapy for hair health and Injecta-Lift using deeply placed hyaluronic acid fillers for facial volume restoration can help.
Why Hair Thinning Happens
Hair loss associated with GLP-1 use is not fully understood, but experts believe it is tied more to rapid weight loss and metabolic shifts than to the medication itself. Nutritional deficiencies, stress on the body, and changes in hormonal balance can all trigger a temporary hair shedding phase known as telogen effluvium.
This condition often improves naturally over time, but many people seek solutions to speed regrowth and support healthier, thicker strands.
Red Light Therapy: Theradome Unisex Pro
Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or Red Light Therapy has emerged as a leading, non-invasive treatment for hair thinning. By delivering specific wavelengths of red light to the scalp, this therapy helps:
- Stimulate hair follicles by improving blood flow and cellular energy (ATP) production
- Increase thickness and density of existing hair shafts
- Extend the growth (anagen) phase of the hair cycle
- Reduce inflammation in the scalp, creating a healthier environment for regrowth
After much research, our team identified the Theradome Unisex Pro as the best red light delivery system for the scalp. Clinical research shows consistent improvements in both male and female pattern hair loss, making the Theradome Unisex pro an ideal supportive treatment for those experiencing GLP-1–related shedding. Compliance with any treatment is critical. With the Theradome Unisex pro, two 20-minute sessions are all that is needed to enjoy the full benefit of scalp red light therapy for thinning hair. It tracks your treatment time and the number of treatments over time and is clinically proven to be effective, easy to use, and well-made and can be used anytime, anywhere.
Theradome Unisex pro Red Light Therapy is also used as part of an integrated approach to hair loss due to myriad causes in both men and women, which I will be addressing in an upcoming newsletter. Personally, I recently purchased three devices. One for personal use and two others for family members experiencing thinning hair.
Understanding “Ozempic Face”
Facial volume loss is another common concern among patients on GLP-1 medications. As weight drops quickly, the fat pads that give the face youthful softness shrink, particularly in the cheeks, temples, and under-eye areas. This can lead to:
- Hollowing of the midface
- More prominent wrinkles and folds
- A tired, aged appearance
While these changes reflect positive progress in overall health, they can leave patients feeling mismatched—healthier and lighter, yet older in appearance.
Injectable Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: Restoring Natural Balance
Fortunately, facial rejuvenation has advanced dramatically with the use of injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. The Injecta-Lift procedure I pioneered, in which HA fillers are placed on the bone below the soft tissues of the face to three-dimensionally and comprehensively elevate, reshape, and rejuvenate the face is very well suited to address the facial hollowing and “down vibe” appearance that often accompanies generalized weight loss.
Injecta-Lift results often last for years without the need for repetitive treatments. This approach enables me to deliver my artistic vision with millimeter level control of the aesthetic outcome. Full volumetric correction combined with deep placement avoids the risk of fillers moving or creating a bloated, unattractive appearance that can be the result of superficially placed HA fillers, repeatedly injected over time. Lastly, if the patient gains their weight back either through the stoppage of GLP-1 medications or other issues, HA fillers are reversible using an injectable medicine called hyaluronidase. This level of control is simply unmatched by any other technique currently available.
Injecta-Lift focuses on achieving natural-looking rejuvenation, enhancing rather than altering. For those affected by “Ozempic face,” the Injecta-Lift technique provides a safe and effective way to bring balance back to the face without surgery.
- Immediate results with minimal downtime
- Restoration of youthful structure in the under-eye area, cheeks, jawline, and temples
- Softening of deep lines and folds around the mouth and nose
- Customizable outcomes tailored to each individual’s unique facial anatomy
- Long-lasting, safe, stable, natural outcome, yet reversible if necessary.
The Takeaway
GLP-1 medications represent a revolution in weight and metabolic health, but their aesthetic side effects—hair thinning and facial volume loss—are real concerns. Fortunately, Theradome Unisex Pro and Injecta-Lift can help. When combined with good nutrition, stress management, and medical guidance, these treatments can help patients fully enjoy the health and appearance benefits of their weight loss journey.
