Hair Restoration: Five Breakthrough Therapies for Fuller, Thicker Hair

Hair thinning and loss affect millions of men and women, often impacting confidence and quality of life. Like so many others, when I turned 60, I began experiencing hair loss at the vertex of my scalp. This should not have come as a surprise since both my grandfathers lost their hair as they aged, as did my father. However, knowing this did not soften the blow. I had always had thick, healthy hair and now it was shedding fast and furiously. With this realization, I began exploring non-surgical options to try to hold onto what hair I had and prevent further loss. Fortunately, the science of hair restoration is rapidly evolving, offering innovative treatments that not only slow hair loss but also stimulate regrowth and improve scalp coverage. I am happy to share what I have learned, in the hope that it will help those of you who are experiencing thinning hair.

At Marietta Facial Plastic Surgery, Laser and Aesthetics Center, we take a team approach to hair loss. I work closely with my physician assistant Kelly Houmand, my aesthetics team and my dermatology colleagues at Marietta Dermatology when medically indicated, to provide our patients with an optimized care plan.

In my opinion, the five therapies we will highlight, when combined, work synergistically to stabilize hair loss, activate follicles, improve scalp health, and produce visible improvements in hair density and thickness.

Ariessence Pure® recombinant platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) injections

Ariessence Pure Recombinant PDGF: Precision Regenerative Therapy

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is a natural signaling protein essential for healing and tissue repair. Experimental and preclinical work shows PDGF can push follicles into and maintain the growth phase and stimulate follicular dermal stem cells and supporting tissues—in short, PDGF helps the follicle ‘wake up’ and rebuild its microenvironment.

Ariessence Pure is a recombinant, bioengineered version of PDGF designed for injectable use, offering consistent quality and increased potency compared to traditional platelet-rich plasma (PRP), without the need for a blood draw. Since the volume of PDGF injected is small, injection discomfort is minimum. I can attest to this as I have had this treatment.

Oral Minoxidil: Convenient, Systemic Hair Growth

Oral Minoxidil, available as a prescription medication, acts to prolong the growth phase, increase hair shaft caliber, and likely increase follicular blood flow. While traditionally applied topically, Low-Dose Oral Minoxidil (LDOM) has been shown to be more efficacious than topical application, with better bio-availability and improved compliance. It is useful when treating both male and female patterned hair loss, with reviews and trials showing meaningful increases in hair counts and patient satisfaction when used under medical supervision.

Promotes follicles to re-enter the growth phase sooner
Prolongs active hair growth cycles
Thickens individual hair shafts for fuller coverage
Offers consistent systemic delivery, unlike topical formulations

At carefully monitored doses, LDOM is well-tolerated and provides predictable, noticeable improvements across the entire scalp. It is an appropriate treatment for both men and women who are experiencing hair loss.

My physician assistant Kelly Houmand and I administer the Ariessence Pure Recombinant PDGF and write prescriptions for Minoxidil.
